Ah how sweet they look!

Perhaps we can expect the patter  of little tyres in the form of a Freelander!

EERI Response to Nepal Earthquake

On April 25, 2015, an M7.8 earthquake struck Nepal 48 miles northwest of Kathmandu, killing a reported 2,500 people across Nepal, India, Bangladesh, and Tibet. Avalanches and powerful aftershocks have followed. The EERI community extends its sympathy to the victims as rescue and relief work still continues.

EERI is currently monitoring the situation from media reports and notes from colleagues in Nepal and surrounding areas as part of its Learning from Earthquakes Program

EERI has set up a virtual clearinghouse website for EERI members to find information and share knowledge about the earthquake impacts at http://www.eqclearinghouse.org/2015-04-25-nepal/

We are in a preliminary data collection phase. We welcome help in gathering and sharing links on the clearinghouse website to media reports, information from earthquake professionals with field reports, or relevant technical literature about Nepal earthquake risk. Email the virtual clearinghouse at eqclearinghouse@eeri.org

The LFE Executive Committee is developing a three-phase reconnaissance recommendation plan:

·         Initial field reconnaissance with EERI members and colleagues from India and           Nepal

·         Creation of an LFE multi-disciplinary team composed of regional experts and             International  participants sent to region in two to five weeks

·         Follow-up team sent in four months to a year for study using the evaluation                 framework  developed by EERI Resilience Observatory for documenting and               measuring resilience

Any questions regarding EERI’s response to this earthquake can be directed to: Heidi Tremayne, EERI Program Manager heidi@eeri.org or Ken Elwood, LFE Chair, University of Auckland k.elwood@auckland.ac.nz

The Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) is a national, nonprofit, technical society of engineers, geoscientists, architects, planners, public officials, and social scientists. EERI members include researchers, practicing professionals, educators, government officials, and building code regulators. The objective of EERI is to reduce earthquake risk by advancing the science and practice of earthquake engineering; improving understanding of the impact of earthquakes on the physical, social, economic, political, and cultural environment; and advocating comprehensive and realistic measures for reducing the harmful effects of earthquakes.

Historical Thames Bridges

A number of surveys to famous listed bridges over the Thames have recently been secured, the first of which has already been carried out.

P1230332

This month saw our dive and inspection teams carrying out a special survey and scour inspection to the grade II listed Kingston Bridge over the river Thames in London.

An underwater scour survey was carried out to each abutment and pier as well as a condition survey to above water areas.  Due to changes in commercial dive regulations recently, we had a total of 8 operatives on site.

Kingston bridge is 116 metres in length and carries an estimated 50,000 vehicles across each day.  The original section of the bridge dates back to 1828 although there have been 2 additional sections added since.

This is just one of the huge number of bridges, tunnels and culverts surveyed each year by our Civil Engineering Consultancy Division making us a leading UK and worldwide provider of bridge inspections.

Artificial Concrete Reef

reef 1Concorr have recently been approached in relation to involvement in a fascinating project to create artificial reefs in the Middle/Far East using
pre-cast concrete balls.

This interesting scheme will see our technical dive teams carrying out a series of before placement, during and after diagnostic testing to reef units to evaluate both conformity as well as effects on the environment.

reef 2Seen as a ground breaking and pioneering way forward in which to use material waste to form units to in turn form reefs to support marine life is a potentially great environment plus and a project that we are extremely interested in being a key part of.
