Concrete & Corrosion Consultancy Presentation – Midhurst 16th January 2013
The Southern Branch 2013 Programme of Events got off to a good start on 16th January at the Grange Centre in Midhurst.
28 Members and guests braved the winter weather to hear Michael Nugent the MD of the Concrete & Corrosion Consultancy Practice Ltd give a comprehensive presentation on the activities of his company.
Concrete and corrosion are uncomfortable bedfellows and we were all made well aware of this fact immediately prior to the 2012 Olympic Games when cases of it were found in the elevated sections of the A4 at Hammersmith resulting in extensive carriageway and lane closures to undertake expensive remedial works to return the structure to full strength condition.
This occurrence is by no means a ‘one off’ and Michael explained in depth how modern survey methods and use of technology can be employed to provide a health check and
establish the exact condition of structures throughout their life span and provide detailed reports together with recommendations in order to keep them fit for purpose.
Based in Canterbury and with a northern office in Mirfield, West Yorkshire the company carries out Inspection and Testing Surveys to EN 1504 standard which is the European standard placing high importance on correct initial diagnosis together with emphasising the need for surveys in order to maintain whole life viability of assets.
Following the survey the company places strong emphasis on the Report which is arguably the most important part of the exercise. This needs to be informative and give valuable answers upon which technically correct repair strategies can be based. If required they also offer Technical Consultancy and Project Management services to clients in conjunction with partners and supply chains thereby providing a holistic service package.
With so many aging structures in highway authority inventories this was a timely introduction for some and a reminder for others that assets need regular detailed inspection in order to maintain them in a ‘fit for purpose’ condition whilst at the same time achieving value for money.
